How do I surrender my animal?
At HRA, our top priority is to help families, and their pets stay together. That is why we offer a variety of community services to address common challenges of long-term pet ownership, including behavior training, access to affordable veterinary care, pet food support, and our Safe Haven Program for residents facing crisis situations.
If surrendering or rehoming a pet is the only option, we’re here to support you. We strongly encourage self-rehoming as it can ease the transition for your pet. Step-by-step instructions are available on our Rehoming Resources Guide.
The District of Columbia provides residents with pet surrender services through its animal control contractor, Brandywine Valley SPCA. District residents can go online or call (202) 888-PETS for more information.
HRA’s ability to accept surrendered pets is limited by shelter capacity and available space. All surrenders must be scheduled in advance by appointment. To check availability or request further assistance, please call 202-723-5730, option 3.
